what you say is true about the scene stagnating, but I think it's more funny that an 'old grissled veteren' such as yourself is already complaining about it. It comes and goes in a big circle. ;-)

The result of this competition may indeed be a 'dick length' measurement. But I still believe that home brew development yields interesting applications. Who knows what we'll see.
