Moses didn't write five books, he wrote a heck of a lot more than that. The Torah, which is only the first part of the TaNaK (Old Testament in Christian terms), has only five books. However, there were a lot more prophets between Moses and Jesus, so his analogy of #6 == Neo == Christ is way off base. Also, I'm not an expert on Gnosticism, but I'm pretty sure that the analogy just as easily fits with Buddhism, Sikkhism or Jainism as it does with Gnosticism. I think to try and tie in some hidden existential message with the film is just plain silly. Interviews with the Wachowski Brothers reveal that they simply wanted to make movies that paid homage to a lot of cool concepts, but not necessarily trying to tie them all together into a new religion. |

Good -- a reviewer who, like me, was more interested in the philosophy of the movie than the fight sequences! I think he's reading quite a bit more into it than was actually there, but then again, the vagueness of some of the references is part of why the Matrix was so fascinating to begin with! |
