The police are reading your blog. by Decius at 2:48 pm EST, Nov 25, 2009 |
Social networking sites are among many new tools law enforcement has adopted to find underage drinkers, said La Crosse police officer Al Iverson, who works in alcohol compliance and education... Iverson pointed out the students still were caught in an illegal act, one they felt comfortable and confident enough about to put photos of on the Internet. Posting those photos, he added, helps glamorize alcohol consumption and binge drinking. Someone else posted photos on a Facebook site of UW-L sophomores Brianna Niesen and Cassie Stenholt holding beer, but they still ended up in court Wednesday pleading no contest and getting fined. “I feel like it is a breach of privacy,” Stenholt said. “You feel like you should be able to trust cops.”

I'm somewhat violating good etiquette here by adding a thought that was sent to me privately: It won't be long before web-crawling photo-bots will be issuing fines automatically a la traffic cameras, taking the officer completely out of the loop. Once the technology exists, its deployment is inevitable.

Tear a page from the traffic cameras and establish a business model where you don't charge municipalities a dime for the service. You show up with a bill they can pass that authorizes you to issue citations and you begin cutting them checks once the money starts rolling in. |

One more reason why this was prescient. |
