It's a satellite view of the night-time landscape in ] eastern Asia, including Japan on the right, and the Chinese ] coast on the left. In the middle is the Korean peninsula. ] What's remarkable is to see how lit up the southern part of ] the peninsula is, and how completely dark that the North Korea ] part of the peninsula is. It's a dramatic indicator of the ] differing economic and technological levels between North and ] South. There was a story on All Things Considered a few months ago about a railway they're building from south to north and into Russia. This of course entailed a major mine-clearing operation in the DMZ. The South Koreans had fancy mine detecting trucks. The DPRK soldiers had metal rods that they gingerly stuck in the ground to feel out the mines. RE: North Korea Is Dark |
