Red-hair gene “suppresses pain in women”
by jessica at 11:28 am EST, Mar 26, 2003

] Researchers, led by Professor Jeffrey Mogil of McGill
] University in Montreal, found that women who possessed
] the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene were able to
] tolerate more pain than either men or women without the
] gene when given the analgesic drug pentazocine.
]
]
] The findings, published in the Proceedings of the
] National Academy of Sciences, confirm the existence of a
] female-specific pain pathway and could ultimately help
] doctors make better choices when prescribing painkillers,
] say the researchers.

I wonder if this is related to the study I read about recently that said red-haired women are harder to anesthesize than others. It's true, too.. I've been told by doctors that I fight certain types of anesthesia. I'm glad to see that red-haired women are getting some press.

Interesting side note.. Someone was telling me recently that the only difference between people with brown hair and people with red hair, is not the color of the hair, but the width of the hair.. Red hair is slightly thinner, which causes it to appear red, and not brown.

Sorry, I do not agree. Some of my hairs are ridiculously thick, and still very red. And I have some hairs which are light brown, and very thin. It's got to be pigmentation.
The real question is: as I've gotten older, why is my hair getting more brown? It used to be carrot orange. Now it's still red, but getting browner. I'd like to see that study.

I'm not sure what the root source of that red hair thickness thing is. It was red haired Joe (the one you know from HS) who told me that.
