Study of a Recent Meme by Hijexx at 11:56 am EST, Mar 24, 2003 |
I keep hearing the same meme since the war started. It always comes in some form similar to the following: "It was fine to protest the war, but now that is has started, we should all support it." The first person I heard say this was Zbigniew Brzezinski during an interview on News Hour a few nights ago. Where was the first place you heard this? Did you hear it from a friend or through the media? I'm not wanting a discussion of the statement itself, just where you first heard it. A study of the origin, if you will... |

Which makes sense, since protesting the war isn't going to get us out of Iraq. I can't say that I've turned the corner on this myself. I don't support the war. I had hoped that the 'shock & awe' crap was real and that it would've been realistically over by now. But I have found that all of that was bullshit in an effort to psycho-war with the Iraqis and get them to flee before it started. In reality, we're going to take quite a few black eyes before all is said and done. I think it's going to become harder and harder for the US populace to support the effort when the casualties start mounting. The age old phrase "what are we fighting for?" is going to replace "It was fine to protest the war, but now that is has started, we should all support it." |

I think I heard that sentiment from friends rather than media. I have also had the thought in my own head, that what good is it to protest it now...how can that change things? I think that is just me trying to process all that is going on in the world. I think its good that people are expressing their differing opinions on the war. I sat at MTSU's anti-war rally and observed both sides, and if I heard someone saying "It was fine to protest the war, but now that it has started we should all support it", I would defintely not agree. |

Maybe I shouldn't have put quotes around it, but it was the general sentiment that I keep hearing and the wording was usually the same. Of course it doesn't make sense to me at all. People who were against us going to war before it started are still going to be against it after the killing starts en masse. |

I mean...maybe I don't make sense in my thinking that supporting the troops is a separate thing from how you feel about the war. But I guess my problem is that I am really confused right now. Normally, I am completely anti-war. I think that everything should be able to be resolved without conflict (am I jaded or what). But this war confuses me...because supposedly it is a war about freedom and peace. So since I am for peace....then in some ways I feel like I should support this war. At the same time, they are not using peaceful means to achieve this peace.....so thats kind of hypocritical. *sigh* Forgive me, for I am confused. |

There is an extent to which, from a strategic perspective, pulling out right now would be much much worse then never having gone in to begin with. However, most of those who oppose war do so for personal, not strategic, reasons, and so are unlikely to be influenced by such thinking (nor should they be). I think this is just a right wing thought trap. However, if you oppose this war only to the extent that you think it should have occured with broad international diplomatic support, then you should support the war now, because you are looking at things strategically, and thats exactly what the English have done. |
