Technorati: Current Events, with context by Rattle at 11:42 pm EST, Mar 21, 2003 |
Woah. This site is extremely cool. Beats the hell out of Blogdex, Popdex, and Daypop. Very similar to some things going on here. Their "Technorati Anywhere!" bookmark is pretty much the same as our Discuss bookmark in how it works and what it does.. This site works much like MemeStreams threads and the top level page, only all their content comes from feeds, and our content comes from MemeStreams user blogs. Our threads aim to be more like discussion areas. Different thrust, some of the same methods.. MemeStreams revolves around the users and the reputation system. The top level (democratic) view is a product of the way the system works, not the focus of the system.. The agent is the focus.. Popularity rules on the top level page, and your immediate community (users whom have high reputation with you) rules in the agent. Its not really clear yet, because we have such a limited number of active users, the system allows for a high amount of clustering. I'm currently working on a system for allowing users to import content from RSS feeds into MemeStreams.. Its still not completely clear how all the details of it are going to work.. Its all work in progress. I'm not in a position where I'm ready to give any kinda ETA for it making it to the site either. Normally I wouldn't even mention it till it was farther along, but after seeing this, its on topic, its unignorable, its inspiring.. At some point we are going to have functionality much like this. Also, From David Sifry's blog (http://www.sifry.com/alerts/archives/000251.html): ] Technorati's got a new feature called Current Events that ] I just whipped up. It is a list of the top links to ] "professional" news sites by bloggers in the last two ] hours, along with comments and analysis. I created it ] because, like most people, I've been following the progress ] of the war, watching and reading the mass media, and I ] wanted to know what people out there were saying about the ] news. What are the most important stories? What is real, ] and what is propaganda? What is not being reported, or is ] being underreported? These were the questions on my mind ] when I created Technorati's Current Events. Ever since the ] Google purchase of Blogger, the thing that struck me as the ] most compelling potential new feature was the combination ] of Google News with Blogger users' commentary. Perhaps ] they'll still do it, but I think I just beat them to it. I like that attitude. ] I'm constantly amazed by the collective wisdom of a huge ] number of individuals, each publishing their thoughts, and ] voting their attention by linking to things. I wanted to ] tap into this collective brainpower, organize it, and ] present it back to us all. And that is what we are working on here too. --- Argh.. It makes me feel really uncomfortable every time I see something thats uber similar to what I'm working on.. It seems to happen often. /me needs to spend less time reading news and more time coding. Wait.. Thats it.. The war.. The War!! I can blame it on the war! I like that. "The War is holding up MemeStreams development." If anyone asks, thats my excuse from here out. |

] Very similar to some things going on here. Their "Technorati ] Anywhere!" bookmark is pretty much the same as our Discuss ] bookmark in how it works and what it does.. Sort of, but not exactly. Their bookmark attempts to solve the same problem, but it doesn't support threading. I think threading is very important. Furthermore, I think the reputation system will factor in heavily here. This presents an interesting design question. When we pull in feeds, ought we to thread them? This may be computationally too intensive for us to do. ] This site works much like MemeStreams threads and the top ] level page, only all their content comes from feeds, and our ] content comes from MemeStreams user blogs. No. Their current events page shows bloggers who have blogged stories from major media outlets. Our main page is more like blogdex then this. The key difference between our site and these systems in both cases is that MemeStreams has a topic system that allows us to organize the content. |

Furthermore, I think the ] reputation system will factor in heavily here. That's roughly what I meant by MemeStreams being more discussion oriented. They are just tracking links. We have yet to really even tap the reputation end of things with the thread code.. ] This presents an interesting design question. When we pull in ] feeds, ought we to thread them? This may be computationally ] too intensive for us to do. There are a ton of issues I have not made any conclusions about in regard to the feed stuff.. I'm still in the process of just getting done the "nuts and bolts" code to manage the feeds, pull down and import the content, etc.. I'm also working on a rewrite of the code that generates user blogs & bios at the same time, since it has similar functions taking place.. And for that matter, Public Circles are going to require much of the same framework.. All reasons why I said in that last email that it felt way premature to mention this on the site.. Its all ways off. There is much work to be done before it really starts to get close to hitting the site.. The changes to user blogs will likely make it to the site before the feeds. The ability to have pictures in your bio, and attached to memes, will happen before feeds.. I'm moving along in the direction of treating the feeds in exactly the same mannor as users.. It all really comes down to what the next version of threads and the agent do.. And to another degree, how we wind up handling mutiple links in memes.. The things I'm working on right now are the pretty straight forward parts.. My rough plan was to get the basic feed handling stuff done, and while fine tuning things like the daemon that retrieves feeds, we could work out the strategy for the changes in the next version of the agent, threads, circles, and recommend that incorporate it.. Also, there is a fair amount of stats munging issues that I want to address.. Need time for that too. Also next revision of the social net stuff, which I have roughly planned out.. And the XML-RPC API.. Durring this whole process, we will probably make radical changes to the database structure.. As far as my thoughts on how we should handle the threading goes.. I have many... Most not very developed yet. Read all this as a brain dump.. Feels premature to be discussing it pubicly, but what the hell, it can't hurt. There is much back end stuff to work out before we really get into the interface/usage issues, and all the parts of it that really effect users in the end, are interface and usage issues. At the top of the thread pages, we can have stats for the URL/articlememe the thread is for.. Stats about what search terms hit the thread hierarchy where it was being discussed.. All kinds ... ] Hrm.. While on the topic of topics, "Society/Media" and maybe ] also "Society/Media/Blogging" might be in order. I was checking Technorati today for a list of all the blog sites that are linking to Salam Pax's updated page: http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/links.html?rank=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dear_raed.blogspot.com I'm still not seeing Memestreams there though. Any idea how we could get Memestreams included in their scan? |
