Half of these pictures do speak the abdominal truth of how the evaporation of credit from the market has impacted a significant number of jobs. I have nothing put sympathy for the thousands of people portrayed in line for jobs.

However, the other half of the photos misrepresent the real tragedy by portraying the inevitable crash resulting from unsustainable growth and poor business practices (e.g. Circuit City and print news media). Throughout the photos, the Globe continually points to the state of the markets, but let's make no mistake that we are not nearly as bad off as the Great Depression. Compare the "Gold Party"...

You just can't. There is no comparison (yet) between what's happening now with reduced demand for luxury goods and what happened then with large numbers of people on the verge of starvation.
