] Studies have indicated that drinking alcohol in ] moderation can cut heart attack risks, and new research ] supports the theory that the same holds true for ] preventing strokes. ] "Light to moderate alcohol consumption may be protective ] against ... stroke while heavy alcohol consumption ] increases the risk," said Kristi Reynolds, a doctoral ] student at Tulane University and co-author of the study, ] which is published in this week's Journal of the American ] Medical Association. ] Tulane University researchers reviewed 35 studies from ] 1983 to 2002 and concluded that one to two drinks a day ] is associated with an almost 30 percent lower risk of ] stroke, the third leading cause of death in the United ] States.
