Paul Offit's Book "Autism's False Prophets" Is Rallying Resistance to the Antivaccine Crusade - NYTimes.com by bucy at 2:46 pm EST, Jan 18, 2009 |
Autism, she said, is one of many diseases, like dyslexia, Elephant Man’s disease, tuberous sclerosis and schizophrenia, that are caused by genetic flaws but show no symptoms for years. She blamed journalists for “creating a conspiracy where there was none.” By acting as if there were two legitimate sides to the autism debate, she said, “the media has fed on this — it’s great for ratings.” Many doctors now argue that reporters should treat the antivaccine lobby with the same indifference they do Holocaust deniers, AIDS deniers and those claiming to have proof that NASA faked the Moon landings.

This is a long-running topic on MemeStreams. Here's a recap: I don't trust it. My impression is that the link between thimerosal and autism is a conspiracy theory ... You don't have an inalienable right to be vulnerable to communicable diseases. This question was resolved in the 1800s. To a large extent, this antivaccination impulse is fueled by an ignorance of the past. Her name is Deborah Alfano. She is an advocate of universal vaccination. That is another way of saying she does not believe you should have a choice when it comes to vaccinations. Executive Order RP65, issued February 2, 2007, directs that all girls entering the sixth grade receive an immunization against HPV. Other states would be wise to follow the same path. Libertarianism and Communicable Disease: a huge HPV vaccine discussion if you're interested. Why not include the carriers? Gerberding's report said, use of the VSD for an ecological study now, comparing autism rates before and after the removal of most mercury from vaccines, "would be uninformative and potentially misleading."

Why thank you for the recap - somehow, I missed this entire discussion - although looking at the dates on the threads, I now think I know *why* I missed all this. The time in which this conversation/argument/discussion was occurring, I actually had just proved that part of my data was not what I thought it was. I observed a phenotype that I attributed to my inhibition of a particular functional domain within a protein. And oh the irony....I had just discovered around the time of this thread that the phenotype was actually due to thimerosal - which is not only found in vaccines, but is also used in a variety of biomedical labs across the world for inhibiting growth of bacteria/fungus/etc in reagents. I guess after that, I was avoiding all things thimerosal:) noteworthy wrote: She blamed journalists for “creating a conspiracy where there was none.” By acting as if there were two legitimate sides to the autism debate, she said, “the media has fed on this — it’s great for ratings.” Many doctors now argue that reporters should treat the antivaccine lobby with the same indifference they do Holocaust deniers, AIDS deniers and those claiming to have proof that NASA faked the Moon landings.
