This idea is what was valid about a Goldwater conservative position. Going too far blows things up. Unfortunately, that position is better exemplified by the current Democrats, especially just about anywhere outside New York or California. The current "social conservative" wing that has taken over the Republican party is reactionary towards the 19th Century on social policy, back towards things that don't work, and as demonstrated by Republican administrations since Reagan, Friedman/Rand leaners on economic policy, a philosophy which is also a failure. The current "conservatism" is an active movement to failed ideas. That's not policy, that's a growing train wreck. The question for this election is, do we want to plow our following train into the pile up, or change tracks? |
