Yes, politicians always have a knack for fighting for free speech, whenever said speech parallels their own views. I doubt that Bush would be so enthusiastic about defending radio shows hosted by the likes of Christopher Hitchens.

Motivations aside, it's still the right thing to do, though. The F.C.C. was correct in abolishing the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, and even if Congress were to pass legislation and subsequently override a veto (which I doubt would happen), it's likely that the Supreme Court would strike down any such federal law.
