Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others, now available on DVD, is the best feature film debut by a director since Orson Welles's Citizen Kane.

Well, it's good, but I don't think it's that good. The plot was rather tidy and despite the twist at the end, I really didn't like the last 5 minutes of the film (the bookstore scene was straight out of Hollywood). It did raise a real question which was when Communism fell, did they really reveal the codenames of agents to the public? That seems like it would be nothing but a vigilante killing spree. |
