It wasn't really the pollution thats so surprising as it is the overwhelming scale of the city combined with the pollution. The effect is that the city appears to extend forever. Everything I thought I thought I knew about Mexico was wrong. Its nothing like it is depicted, or the impression you might get from impoverished immigrants. Mostly I work on avenues Reforma and Insurgentes, and these can stand up in terms of glitz and architecture to any city in the world. And yeah, its polluted. But I never imagined how much. It feels like you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day here. There are no AK wielding guards. There are FAL wielding guards at major public places, but As to safety, nowhere near the center is unsafe during the day. At night you wouldn't want to walk around some places. On the whole, this is a very nice place. People are very nice. It is impossibly large, and traffic is amazing. But its still great. |
