The Big Picture | Friday Night Jazz: Favorite Holiday CDs
by Decius at 8:39 am EST, Dec 4, 2007

Its that time of year: It started around Halloween, and by now I am already tired of walking into stores and getting assaulted with endless repetitions of really bad, really corny Xmas music we've all heard far too many times to enjoy any longer. (I say, F&%k Rudolph!)

Here's a way to get into the holiday musical spirit without having to endure the usual annoying cloying tunes. This is one holiday-themed list that won't make you ill.

Our family owns three of these and we have prefered them to the usual holiday crap for many years.

I might have to try that Ella Fitzgerald album. Of those listed, I have A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Winter's Solstice: Windham Hill Artists, and Christmas with the Rat Pack. I have several others not on that list including jazz, swing, blues, as well as the traditional "holiday crap." lol

My favorite album for the past several years has been Blue Yule. As far as I'm concerned, there's no other Christmas album that's that good all the way through. I especially like Sonny Boy Williamson's "Santa Claus."

Growing up, I had only one Christmas album, which has been out of print for decades, and was never released on CD. Although I still have the phonograph disc, it's in horrible condition. Over the years, though, I've managed to collect most of those recording on other releases, but I've had no success finding anything by Anna Maria Alberghetti on CD. Anyway, it might not seem like much now, but in the mid 60s & early 70s, it was pretty cool.
