Google releases Android programming tools by unmanaged at 5:20 pm EST, Nov 13, 2007 |
Google on Monday released programming tools for its Android mobile-phone alliance for download, giving developers the ability to start writing software for phones due to start shipping in 2008 and $10 million in prizes to lure them. The software development kit (SDK), an open-source package available for download for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X machines, shows that Java is indeed the programming language for software running on the Linux-based phones. Accompanying the SDK is a raft of details that wasn't available when Google and its partners announced the Open Handset Alliance a week ago. The Android software includes the Google-created Dalvik virtual machine for running Java programs, a browser based on the WebKit engine, and support for many media and image file formats. (Note: I clarified that the browser is only based on the WebKit engine.) And hardware abilities permitting, it also supports wireless communications using GSM mobile-phone technology, 3G, Edge, 802.11 Wi-Fi networks. Conspicuously missing from the list is the widely used CDMA mobile-phone technology developed by Qualcomm. To jump-start the Android programming effort, Google is offering $10 million total in prizes, each ranging from $25,000 to $275,000, to programmers picked by a panel of judges.

We finally have the code sorted out to the extent that its technically possible for us to expose an API. What would we like to do with an API? Well, the first and most obvious thing would be to allow people to import their RSS feeds into memestreams. It could also mean that devices like phones and myth tvs could more easily interact with memestreams. If you're interested in actually working on exposing an API for this or other applications let us know. |

What kinds of applications would you like to see Andriod support? What would you do with MemeStreams and a cellphone? |

Memestreams enabled phone for real world (live) social blogging?
The killer utility for the mobile phone, much like anything else we are using these days, is the web browser. So making MemeStreams really mobile aware, comes down to having ways to easily make posts that use whatever the mobile platform gives you. This comes down to a really basic subset of things... Stuff like posting pictures and sharing contact information. I'm interested in whatever hooks the browsers on these devices provide to access device capabilities. I'd like to think that functions like linking to a geographical location and pulling up a map with directions would be easy. As far as security issues go, it's going to be a hell of a playground. I'm going to have to give Android a good look over.. The mechanics of how the trust relationship between the device and a web app work is key. It's possible to come up with a really good way to do it. Google is all about the webapp. Acidus should look at this stuff. When I see what can be done with ajax, and I see the iPhone browser, it looks like almost everything I can think of that's necessary to build a great social mobile platform.. There is no reason phone webapps shouldn't be able to function perfectly across multiple platforms. If the mobile service/phone companies screw this one up, then it's time to just burn them to the ground and start over with mesh networks or cans and strings or something.... |

So, here is an idea. If I'm at a physical location I can "meme" that location. I can post pictures, talk about why its interesting, etc... Then I could ask a mapping application to show physical locations near me that other people have memed. I could sort these with the reputation agent. The key ingredient is developing a uniform resource locator standard for physical places. |
