Nerd Help
by Dr. Nanochick at 12:59 am EDT, Oct 17, 2007

So, for many years, I have been into playing games on my computer. One of my favorite games is Myst...I am really interested in games where I am solving puzzles/figuring things out, etc. However, lately, I have found it quite challenging to find similar games as Myst...and at the moment, I have no game that I am working on, which is driving me crazy. Thus, I am wondering if anyone around Memestreams knows of any good computer games that are Myst-esque. I am mostly interested in puzzle/adventure games. I really am horrible at playing games involving me having to kill something before it kills me (too stressful) but if you know of any good game, even if it isn't an adventure/puzzle game, let me know about it.

And no...I am not interested in getting sucked into WOW or anything...I do have a PhD to work on after all (which requires actually going to work):)

I used to play Myst a long time ago, and I have another PC game that's very similar (in other words, no action), but I can't remember the name. I want to say "Beyond... something or other." It's about three discs long. I'll look when I get home and post the title tonight.

The Silent Hill and Resident Evil series have a lot of puzzle-solving in them, but they probably have too much "kill something before it kills you" action for your requirements. The same goes for the Zelda and Tomb Raider series.

Here's a review of Portal. I finished it this weekend. It's a quick game, you can run through it in about 4 hours. But it's fairly mind bending. When you finish, there are advanced bonus and challenge levels you can play as well.

Not technically a first person shooter because you don't actually have a weapon, just a device that shoots portals. But it's a slick puzzle game with an interesting story that unfolds. You're basically cast as a lab rat in a testing facility with a H.A.L. like computer guiding you through. Hard to explain, just gotta see it in action.

Trailer below.

Portal is awesome. I highly recommend playing it. The actual game seems a little short compared to other Hale Life style games ... but you will spend alot of time after the game is over trying out faster, better trials that seem impossible.

And the HAL computer has a really cute song at the end of the game.

Agreed. I haven't purchased a computer game in around seven years (the last game was The Sims in 2000) and I bought this after seeing the preview. It's extremely creative, and in some senses feels like a modern rendition of the Adventures of Lolo, one of my favorite NES games.

I'm not a gamer at all, but I highly recommend this one.

Haha...yes, Clint and I bought that game this weekend. I haven't played it yet, but I watched Clint play it a bit, and it looked pretty fun/pretty trippy.

O.K., I found them. The first game is "Beyond Atlantis" and the second game is "The Crystal Key." They've been out for a while, but they're very Myst-like.

My 11 yo is checking out Portal. He said it looked cool.

He's all into Doom because he can modify it. He went through all the MUGEN files modifying this and that as well.

Does anyone know of any other open source games that will run on an win32 platform that can be modified? He's exploring being a game designer.

He's good with flash and can modify those type files too if required for the game mod.

Played Portal yet? Portal is definately a mind-bender. Hijexx recently beat the game, I messed with it for a while and it's pretty hot, but I went back to my World of Warcraft shortly after. LOL

Another one is not exactly Myst-esque, but it does present itself quite a few challenges, game can be picked up for $10 and it's a rather old game but the graphics are nice. The Longest Journey by Funcom. They have another game along those lines called Dreamfall.

Dreamfall Link
The Longest Journey Link

Cheers
