What the hell was this talk about anyway? It had a lot of attention, but the premise seemed, well, lame. In a kind of 13-year-old "my dad can beat up your dad" kind of way.

Basically the idea is that the origin of the hacker scene is the most technical stuff at the lowest abstraction layers. Computers are not "cool." Its not about being in a scene. Its not about how you look or how your computers look. Its about what code you are writing. And the lower level the code the better.

This theme in the hacker scene is as old as the hills. Hackers always looked down on doodle boys and other computer cultures.

On the one hand it serves a purpose in encouraging people in the hacker scene to actually learn deep technical stuff and apply it. People have a tendancy to be lazy in a scene like this. Most people who claim to be hackers can't write a lick of code.

On the other hand, it produces people who don't understand that the definition of "smart" is not a measure of knowledge about computers. It also tends to produce people who don't know the difference between information and knowledge. But, of course, the HR industry shares that second problem. :)
