See Who's Editing Wikipedia - Diebold, the CIA, a Campaign
by Elonka at 12:29 am EDT, Aug 14, 2007

Wikipedia Scanner -- the brainchild of CalTech computation and neural-systems graduate student Virgil Griffith -- offers users a searchable database that ties millions of anonymous Wikipedia edits to organizations where those edits apparently originated, by cross-referencing the edits with data on who owns the associated block of internet IP addresses.

Virgil's on Wired. :)

(Update: Slashdotted)

the bbc version of this story is nice

On the profile of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the tool indicates that a worker on the CIA network reportedly added the exclamation "Wahhhhhh!" before a section on the leader's plans for his presidency.

A warning on the profile of the anonymous editor reads: "You have recently vandalised a Wikipedia article, and you are now being asked to stop this type of behaviour."

nice to see the CIA with a sense of humour 8-)

Wow Virgil, you made the Drudge report!
I like your page to the press. That's great. :) I just wish more people would focus on the Diebold edits!

Diebold spins off entire voting systems unit

Diebold has no shortage of issues due to their voting machine issues. It is getting attention...

The company has been forced to spin off the entire unit and give it a new name. The issues surrounding their voting machines is negatively effecting the company's entire brand, even though it is an extremely small percentage of their sales and manufacturing.

Virgil and his Wikipedia IP Scanner have been covered in Wired.
