Heh... That's ironic because insanity is central to the original plot. Without the Freudian references and characterizations there isn't much left. There's the religious arrogance of man of recreating God in his own image, but even still it uses Freud to manufacture a soul with Rei(ego), Shinji(super-ego), and Asuka(id). Most of the rest of the characters are samples of insanity based on the conflict between id and super-ego. I think the insanity helped the series... I think it was the post-modern stringing together of bullshit it could have done with less of.
hm, i suppose i may have worded my comment wrongly, because i actually agree with what you said. it seemed to me that the relationships between the three pilots was, as you say, interesting, though I'm not topically exepert enough to have seen very deeply into the psychology.
