WorldCom's downfall is swelling the exodus of workers from the telecom industry, which alone has accounted for more than 10% of jobs lost in the latest US recession. Having wildly overexpanded in the 1990's, telecom companies have been rushing to shrink ever since, serving as a drag on the economic recovery.
