When given a map of the United States, 1 in 3 fourth-graders could not identify the state in which they lived and 16% of eighth-graders could not locate the Mississippi River. 40% of eighth-graders did not know that Florida is a peninsula. Only 61% of fourth-graders and 71% of eighth-graders knew that the Pacific Ocean is the world's largest. 50% of eighth-graders and 61% of seniors knew that Hinduism is the most widely practiced religion in India.
