Few people in the United States understand the scientific process and many believe in mysterious psychic powers and may be quick to accept phony science reports, according to a national survey. 70% of American adults do not understand the scientific process. 60% believe in ESP. 30% believe aliens visit Earth, 43% read astrology charts. 46% don't know that the Earth orbits the sun each year. 55% don't know what a laser does. 66% don't understand or accept the Big Bang. 52% of Americans think dinosaurs and humans lived together. 47% either don't understand or don't accept the theory of evolution. How can we possibly include people in a national debate about our posthuman future when so many are so clueless? (Maybe I should have filed this article under the Humor topic instead.) |
