'Second Life' faces threat to its virtual economy | CNET News.com

Groups of Second Life content creators were gathering digitally Tuesday to protest the dissemination of a program they worry could badly damage the virtual world's nascent economy. The controversy gathered steam Monday when Linden Lab, which publishes Second Life, posted a blog alerting residents of the virtual world to the existence of a program or bot called CopyBot, which allows someone to copy any object in Second Life. That includes goods such as clothing that people purchase for their in-world avatars, and even the virtual PCs that computer giant Dell announced Tuesday it is going to sell in the digital world.

Replicators seem to function well in star trek... I gouess were're about to see a projection on how this might affect things. |

Replicators seem to function well in star trek... I gouess were're about to see a projection on how this might affect things.
Well, yeah.. The replicator is how the Star Trek Federation made communism work. :) However, Second Life exists requiring support from a world that does not contain replicators, hence it must create an economy that interfaces with the economy that exists around around it. |

Well, yeah.. The replicator is how the Star Trek Federation made communism work. :) However, Second Life exists requiring support from a world that does not contain replicators, hence it must create an economy that interfaces with the economy that exists around around it.
I'm sure star trek had to have something like that too... I'm just not enough of a treckie to know. But I'm sure it was a wormhole, crystalline, quasi dimansional entity or something that served just this purpose on the economy of Star Trek. |

I'm sure star trek had to have something like that too... I'm just not enough of a treckie to know. But I'm sure it was a wormhole, crystalline, quasi dimansional entity or something that served just this purpose on the economy of Star Trek.
If they didn't address this in Enterprise somehow, the series they did after Deep Space Nine and Voyager, then they just lamed out.. I don't know. I didn't watch it. |
