Rock ‘n’ Roll High School by noteworthy at 8:56 am EDT, Oct 14, 2006 |
CBGB’S shuts down this weekend. It was a private world. We dreamed it up. It flowered out of our imaginations. How often do you get to do that? CBGB’s was like a big playhouse, site of conspiracies, orgies, delirium, refuge, boredom, meanness, jealousy, kindness, but most of all youth. God loves CBGB’s.

I feel like such a schmuck. I was a block away last night, at the KGB Bar, and I didn't budget enough time to see CBGB's before it closed. |

Don't. CBGB's has been 'closing' since 1988. It's like that grandmother in the nursing home that no one likes to talk about. Well, she's finally laid to rest. Good riddence. All the kids have bickered her life savings away. It's apocryphal that they're taking the remnants to Las Vegas. It bothers me that a) we've got to sell out EVERYTHING in this world, including a lifestyle that abhored selling out, and b) that even punk's luminaries are so mortal and jaded now that they can't help themselves from turning into nostaligic baby boomer self-loving idiots. Sorry Blank Generation, you and the Hippies didn't change shit. Just because something was cool does not mean that it needs to be revered, packaged, and productized. It just means it was cool. Leave it at that. |

Oh well. The KGB Bar still kicks ass. |

Richard Hell in the New York Times...CBGB’S shuts down this weekend. It was a private world. We dreamed it up. It flowered out of our imaginations. How often do you get to do that? I will always remember the line that Sunshine Flipside once opened a show at CBGB's with. "Hello everyone, we're here to fuck it up for everyone!" |
