Very cool!
http://www.maranathachurchplains.org/ Its a Baptist church, but a good one. They're quite laid back, relaxed, and kind. I showed up dressed as in the picture, with tattoos visible and apologized at the door for being under-dressed and they really didn't care. They made me feel welcome. Anyone can go. He's there most Sundays (his schedule is on the church website). He always lets you take pictures. This Sunday was his birthday (He is 82), and he even had a family reunion he was late for, but he let everyone get a picture anyway. Plains, GA is about 3 hours south of Atlanta on Highway 19. Sunday school starts at 10AM, but its best to get there early so that means leaving the ATL at 6AM. Earlier if you're north of the city. There were a bunch of secret service guys protecting him, and a bomb-sniffing dog, but they were very polite and courteous. I haven't been to church since I was... 10? 11? But as I recall them, this Sunday School was tops. Carter uses examples from his presidency, and from current politics to illustrate biblical principles. It keeps it relevant and interesting. I'm not a Christian, I'm a half-assed Buddhist, but I enjoyed it. Even the service afterwards was palatable, though not quite as entertaining as President Carter's Sunday School. Afterwards Mom's Kitchen in downtown Plains, a half mile from the church, is the bomb. Good fried chicken, greens, corn nuggets and corn bread. Plains is a nice little town, very well kept. Highly recommended. I mean, honestly... what better use of Sunday AM do most ATLiens make? |
