I saw this last month; the performances are all quite good, but overall I found myself unable to give the film more than three out of five stars. Anthony Lane summed it up in the New Yorker review I recommended last month:

What we get is a picaresque, though stripped of jauntiness: in short, one damn thing after another.

I saw it tonight. I agree. Good performances... 3 out of 5 stars overall. Seemed to stick to the book, though, which was in fact just a string of disconnected scenes.

One thing: I can't BELIEVE how frumpy they managed to make normally attractive women in this movie.
