Synopsis: Factotum

Based on the novel by (and the life of) Charles Bukowski, 'Factotum' follows Henry Chinaski (Matt Dillon), whose fondness for booze, gambling and sex keeps him perpetually adrift. Henry occasionally attempts to work on his writing career, but his haphazard efforts yield him little but rejection letters from publishers. Somewhere along the way he falls into a relationship with Jan (Lili Taylor), a fellow lost soul who shares his taste for living on the edge.

This is playing at the Tara in Atlanta. WOOT! Go Chinaski!

I saw this last month; the performances are all quite good, but overall I found myself unable to give the film more than three out of five stars. Anthony Lane summed it up in the New Yorker review I recommended last month:

What we get is a picaresque, though stripped of jauntiness: in short, one damn thing after another.

I also recommended the NYT article about the film.

I saw it tonight. I agree. Good performances... 3 out of 5 stars overall. Seemed to stick to the book, though, which was in fact just a string of disconnected scenes.

One thing: I can't BELIEVE how frumpy they managed to make normally attractive women in this movie.
