Life With Alacrity
by Decius at 12:36 am EDT, Sep 14, 2006

A blog on social software, collaboration, trust, security, privacy, and internet tools, by Christopher Allen.

One of the slashdot posters in the Puppy Smoothies thread recommended this blog, which is a combination of very intelligent posts on internet rating/reputation systems and startup financing. Excellent.

I just happen to be investigating various software tools that support rating, ranking, and/or reputation, and when I arrived here I found my blog mentioned at the top ;-)

I'm in-progress on a long article on "Collective Choice: Reputation Systems", the longest yet of my Collective Choice articles. Biggest problem finishing it is that reputation is very tangled with other problems: all problems with identity systems are also in reputation, most trust problems are in reputation, as well as many of the issues in rating and ranking that I've already identified in previous articles.

Let's hear it for good timing. :)

I have not yet had a chance to read over the content on your blog at length, as it was just pointed out to me by Tom this morning.

It is not an overstatement to say we have been researching and working on these issues you mentioned since 2001. I will fully admit, we have been horrible at executing on our vision and designs. MemeStreams is a two man project, and both people involved have been incapable of working on it full-time. Your expertise in getting projects of this type funded is highly of interest.

We gave a talk at a hacker convention last year about some of the stuff we are working on. Almost all ideas discussed has evolved significantly since then, but the talk gives background on much of what we want to be going on here, that isn't actually being implemented at this time.. MemeStreams as it is right now, is a proof of concept.

I've had this blog in my NetNewsWire client for a few years now.

You may also recall that I recently blogged Mr. Allen's talk on the Dunbar number, although no one else either looked at it or seemed to find it worth recommending. Maybe you'd like to reconsider?

Did this happen to be in one of those sprees when you posted six pages of memes at a time? :)

Sorry I missed it.

Yes.

Sorry I missed it.

This is one of the consequences of having "since last visit" as the default timeframe. A while back I developed a client-side tool for scheduling posts, so as to avoid the "unseen recommendations" problem. Due to various site changes, I don't think my tool works any more, so I haven't been using it. Maybe I should look into it again.

It is clear this is an excellent blog just based on a once-over. I'm going to have to catch up on this guy's content.
