FDA approves AbioCor heart by Mike the Usurper at 3:20 pm EDT, Sep 6, 2006 |
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the sale of the world's first totally implanted artificial heart -- the AbioCor, pioneered in Louisville. The decision runs against the advice of an advisory panel last year, which essentially said the risks of the AbioCor heart were greater than the benefits. The panel's vote in June 2005 was 7-6.
So let me make sure I have this right. The advisory panel says no (close vote though) to the plastic heart, and the FDA approves it over their objection. A previous advisory panel voted 23-4 to approve Plan B for over the counter sale with no restrictions, and just to make sure there wasn't an issue, also noted 27-1 that there is no medical reason to restrict it based on age. I am goddamn sick of money, politics and religion sticking in on basic medical decisions. Vioxx is safe, at least it looks like it is because we covered up some of the studies. Plan B gets held up for 3 years because some pinhead wants to force his religion on the rest of us. I'm not opposed to a plastic heart, I think it could be great. But if the advisory board thinks it's not ready and wants more testing done, what's the issue? |

(sarcasm) No one ever died from a failed abortion. (/sarcasm) |

Considering Plan B makes it a non-pregnancy, there is not a medical issue here. As far as the actual comment, I call bullshit. Based on data extrapolated for death statistics concerning abortions in general the death rate from complications is about 1.6 per 100,000 (that's some seriously fuzzy math based on http://www.vanderbilt.edu/sfl/illeg.htm and the supposed 1.5 million abortions a year stat tossed around). In the meantime based on this, http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/vital_statistics/2003/table33a.htm, the fatality rate going to term is more than a order of magnitude higher. No sarcasm at all, the comment that "no one ever died..." is crap. And of course, the response ignored the actual point, I am goddamn sick of money, politics and religion sticking in on basic medical decisions. Vioxx is safe, at least it looks like it is because we covered up some of the studies. Plan B gets held up for 3 years because some pinhead wants to force his religion on the rest of us.
To be fair, I can actually chop politics out of that statement, because the politics are being run by the money and religion, so including it is redundant. |

I'm with you, I'm just lazy. Yes, I should have left that part in. I was looking at it more from the angle that an artificial heart failing would cause a fatality, not that people don't die from abortions and the always popular angle from the anti-abortion groups that abortion is murder. I guess there's about two and a half memes there that I've mixed together. |
