CNN.com - Russia kills most-wanted warlord - Jul 10, 2006 by janelane at 11:54 am EDT, Jul 10, 2006 |
FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev said on Monday that Basayev, who claimed responsibility for the 2004 Beslan school attack in which 331 people, half of them children, were killed, was planning an attack to coincide with Russia hosting the G8 summit of world leaders this weekend. CNN's Matthew Chance said the killing was a massive victory for the security services and a huge blow for the rebel leadership. Russian television showed Patrushev meeting Monday with Putin to tell him about the special operation in Ingushetia -- a republic bordering Chechnya -- in which Basayev was killed in the early morning hours of Monday. The Russian agents exploded a truck bomb next to several cars in which Basayev and other rebels were riding, according to Interfax, which was quoting Ingush Deputy Prime Minister Bashir Aushev. "This is retaliation he deserves for killing our children in Beslan, Budennovsk, all the terrorist acts his bandits perpetrated in Moscow and other regions of Russia, including Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic," Patrushev said in an Interfax report. Law enforcement officials in Ingushetia told Interfax Basarev's body was in pieces but it was identified by his head and by the fact that he had earlier lost a foot.
Whoa...hard core. It's only too bad they were able to draw out his death a little longer. Good riddance to bad child-killing rubbish. -janelane, there has *got* to be a hell for people like this |

Don't believe everything you read about the Chechyn rebels. There's a lot of propaganda spread around the Russian news circuits that is outright lies. It wouldn't suprise me that Basarev had nothing to do with Beslan. |

Perhaps, but surely they kill people all the time that have nothing to do with anything and they obviously don't tout every one of them on international news circuits. They're kind of like us with our once-in-a-while major Al Qaeda operative killings. I conceed the point, though; if he didn't do it, they shouldn't drag his name through the mud. -janelane, working to unravel the propaganda machine |

So they only found one foot? What if they just missed the other one? :) |

I'm glad he's dead. Basayev was a monster. But before we start cheering, lets try to remember the fact that about half of the people of Chechnya are DEAD, and that it was Russian butchers that turned ordinary men like Basayev into monsters. Those seeking to stop outright genocide waged by a nuclear power against their people rarely have the luxury of decency. |

Agreed. The story behind what's gone on there is horrific. It's one thing to see the sheer terror across the African continent and its warring tribes and sects, but this is a leading power that has basically stopped at nothing to eradicate what essentially amounts to a creed of people. It's the same as if the US had destroyed Hawaii. The reason why this assassination was crowed so much about was that it's likely the last nail in the coffin. There's no one left to fight and ethnic cleansing has already taken its toll there. |

I don't think Russia is the sole villian by any means, though. When Chechnya had effective independance during Yeltsin's reign after the first Chechyn war, they had this... bad habit of invading Russia and taking entire towns hostage. |

That might have been due to the fact that economically they were not independant. No jobs. Invisible 'sanctions' and tariffs. Rampant corruption. In any case, there's never just one villian in any conflict. Particularly when blood gets shed. |

I agree. I think the take-home message is that this is not a conflict worth cheering about when ANYONE dies... the only good news will be peace. A lasting, meaningful peace whereby Chechnya is allowed to grow and prosper. |
