403 Broadway 12401 - Google Maps by k at 3:51 pm EDT, Jun 20, 2006 |
[More Google Maps fun... for me anyway... Check out my High School. It's 7 buildings - the central, E-shaped main building and the two behind it and then two to either side (connected by glassed in walkways). The ones on the right side, by the field, are the gym and swimming pool, and on the left are the science and art wings. The little building towards the front where the arrow actually points isn't even part of the school, curiously. It's a library building that was part of an endowment (Carnegie, possibly?) a long long time ago. It was boarded up well before I started there in 92. If you look close, you can see the KHS bushes on the front lawn... I find it strangely pleasant to think that those silly bushes can be seen from space. -k] |

Google earth at that zoom is from high altitude airplane shots, is it not? |

/. I think, so I'm probably wrong. Wait, no. It was in the discussion of the UFO appearances in google maps. The discussion someplace seemed to indicate that the way the UFOs appeared in the sample place on multiple grids was indicative of condensation on a high altitude lens. I can't think of where this was from, but word was that beyond a certain zoom, Google Earth is based on high altitude photos from airplanes. Still not sure if its true. |

Sure, just rain on my parade! :) Actually, the most compelling evidence supporting your claim is that the bottom of the map frame contains the text "(C) 2006 New York GIS" right after the Google copyright. I'm pretty sure NYGIS isn't in the practice of funding satellites, but high res flyovers are quite likely. What I'm not sure about is why they'd care about Kingston NY in 2006. I mean, I like the place pretty well, and it was the first capital of NY, but still. Back in the 80's and 90's there was a massive IBM complex there (it was rumored among the school children that the complex, for some reason never well articulated, contained one of the nuclear launch keys, or some related national defence role) but that hardly seems relevant as IBM bailed (nearly destroying the town) in the mid 90's. [shrug] Still cool... I can almost see the cars in my driveway, or maybe my dad was at the office when the pics were taken. It appears to be evening based on the shadows. |
