New York Post | Exploited GI sues Michael Moore by Rattle at 6:44 pm EDT, May 31, 2006 |
A double-amputee Iraq-war vet is suing Michael Moore for $85 million, claiming the portly peacenik recycled an old interview and used it out of context to make him appear anti-war in "Fahrenheit 9/11." Sgt. Peter Damon, 33, who strongly supports America's invasion of Iraq, said he never agreed to be in the 2004 movie, which trashes President Bush. "They took the clip because it was a gut-wrenching scene," Damon said yesterday. "They sandwiched it in. [Moore] was using me as ammunition." "I just want everybody to know what kind of a guy Michael Moore is, and what kind of film this is," said Damon. He has appeared in two films attacking "Fahrenheit" -"Michael Moore Hates America" and "Fahrenhype 9/11." His image appears seconds after Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) says, "You know, they say they're not leaving any veterans behind, but they're leaving all kinds of veterans behind." "I'm the most fortunate disabled guy. I've even had a house built for me [by a nonprofit group, Home for Our Troops]." Particularly outrageous to Damon is the fact that Moore never interviewed him or asked his permission to use the old clip. "We attempted to resolve the situation amicably with Mr. Moore [for a year] but he refused," he said.
This guy probably has a good case. The usage of his likeness may have been waved, but he was no doubt casted in a "false light". In relation to this, I strongly suggest seeing the documentary by Michael Wilson, Michael Moore Hates America. I was seriously impressed with it. Wilson paints a very accurate picture of Moore, using Moore's own narrated journey documentary style. Wilson also makes some great statements about documentaries as a journalistic art form. This documentary is very serious about itself, and at several points stops to examine its own intentions and methods. The scene that features Damon was the most powerful part of Wilson's documentary. I was seriously angered that Moore took advantage of someone who has served with honor and paid a serious price in the process. It's both heartbreaking an inspiring. This guy lost his fucking arms, and he proudly proclaims that his service in the military has improved his life in every way! Regardless of your interest in Moore, you should see this documentary if you love documentaries. It has not gotten the attention it deserves. |

How ironic that the single review on Rattle's IMDB link gives the film a piss poor 1/10. Now I *definitely* want to see it. :-) Its too bad MM had to go and dick around so much...he really could have been brilliant. Bowling for Columbine had a few righteous NRA overtones, but F9/11 was shamefully biased especially with respect to the facade of showing the "true" story. My newest favorite pop-documentarist is Morgan Spurlock. A little alarmist, but at least he's willing to put his neck on the line. -janelane, equivocally |

Eh? You are _so_ nationalistic. Always hammering this Canadian line of yours. It's not like we make Canada jokes at your expense every time we have an opportunity... Don't laugh. It's not funny. I got your number. I've figured it all out. You and your family are Canadian spies. Your sister claims to be getting her doctorate in order to research cures to diseases and help mankind, but I know the truth! It's really only a plot to milk knowledge of our amazing American health care system, and take it all back to your socialist state. How do you like that, mister security expert? Michael Moore.. Your greatest weapon. The whole purpose of Bowling for Columbine was to get Americans not to lock their doors and relinquish our effectively distributed stock of firearms. F911 was all about making us distrust our superior leadership. I know all the conspiracy theories. I'm a scholar in them! I'm a conspiracy artist! You can't pull that Canadian wool you use to keep your cold hearts worm over _my_ eyes! I see the calculated information warfare campaign being waged by our "friendly neighbors to the north", with your government subsidized film and TV. Art? Ha! I see the TRUTH! It's nothing but advertisement for your corrupted culture, reinforcing a hippy culture rife with marijuana and booze, just the way mother Britain used opium. Some will read this and think I am being facetious. They are the brainwashed. To them, I say simply, Canada even has a section of the country that speaks only French! What could be more evil? To those unbelievers, I say that we must realize we have truly exported American values over our grand history, and these will come back to bite us, from above. When that day comes, I for one, am ready for it. |
