If its true, that's kind of amazing... that they failed. Sure, Vatican security is robust. Still, I had imagined Cold War KGB or CIA as being able to pull off an assasination if given orders from high enough. Collect proper intelligence, maybe not, but to destroy something? Apparently, I've seen too many movies.
