The Cover Pages: VeriSign NetDiscovery Lawful Intercept Service by Decius at 6:35 pm EST, Jan 19, 2006 |
"We have the ability to access virtually any packet data network and by using mediation equipment deployed in our network, VeriSign can provide a secure, reliable, cost-efficient solution that enables carriers with GPRS or CDMA 1x technologies to comply with all lawful intercept requirements without impacting network performance."
How would you feel if I told you that Verisign has the capability to listen to all of your telephone calls. How would you feel if I told you their lawyers are the ones who decide whether or not to a law enforcement request is up to snuff? |

I'd feel uncomfortable. I'd respond by reminding everyone of their past abuses of power and allege that they are not a party that should be trusted with more power. I'd state it as my professional opinion. I'd harken to current abuses of executive power, as well as Verisign's arrogance driven by their connections to the commerce department. I'd say that we have a wolf in wolf's clothing, and that it should be obvious. I'd say that the real value created by this new Verisign product/service is not for the service providers they are marketing it to. However, I'm pretty sure it would all fall on deaf ears when it wasn't falling in ears that were already aware of this. |

When I see VeriSign talk about "lawful" intercept, for some reason I am reminded of a particular scene from The Simpsons episode BABF12, "Pygmoelian": The Simpsons arrive at the Duff Days site. Homer switches off the beer music, to the kids' relief. As soon as they step out of the car, though, a live band plays exactly the same tune. Near the entrance, a man is dressed as Surly, one of the Seven Duffs.
