The Canadian Liberal minority was defeated 171-133 today in a historic vote of non-confidence. The minority goverment only survived for one year and five months. Why did they do this? What did Martin's government do to inspire this vote?

At the head of the dispute is the Sponsorship scandal, a Liberal scheme to funnel money through false contracts and incentives. It's at best a money pit, at worst an embezzlement scheme. Martin spends money in general like it's going out of style and so do many of the Liberal cohorts. The party has been in office for 13 years, 12 of which were under Jean Chretien, during much of that time there's been a fair list of blunders (our gun registry, which has run over budget by 1.8 billion) and abuses.
