Long story short, the people in these studies thought they were administering shocks to the subjects, many to a 'letal' level.
Anyway, the point is that people respond to authority, it's pretty much built in(to the society that we've been raised in... very much an environmental thing).
Erk, i'm running late -- but (hopefully) you see my point... well, I don't know what my point is... I guess just that it's not _that_ surprising what went on.
I haven't read the study, but does it have experiments that involve sexual abuse? If not, we're talking apples to oranges here.
