PhreakNIC TV Update - No Maps for these Territories by Rattle at 4:18 pm EDT, Oct 19, 2005 |
As previously mentioned, Industrial Memetics is going to be sponsoring the PhreakNIC convention TV channel. We encourage all convention attendees to bring CDs or DVDs with video we can air on the station. Anything that we don't have to worry about the licensing of is open game. That means many clips of odd and strange things are game. Its suggested you raid the Internet Archive. I have some big news... I just got off the phone with Mark Neale, the maker of No Maps for these Territories, the recent documentary about William Gibson, and he is allowing us to show the film. Mark seemed about as excited as I am of the prospect of showing all you his most excellent film at the second oldest hacking convention in the United States. Hopefully I'll be able to clear the rights for another thing or two before the weekend. |

I think I might be responsible for this meme. When I said this Summercon had basically gone away and I wasn't aware that Pumpcon was still around. Defcon, Pumpcon, Summercon, and Hope are older. Apparently they are still holding Pumpcons and Summercon has seen a recent resurgence. Defcon started in '93, Pumpcon sometime in the early 90's I think, and Summercon started in '86, Hope in '95. It might be reasonable to say that Phreaknic is the oldest "regional" hacker con... A huge number sprouted up after us... In any event, I'm glad we are getting to screen that film. I've wanted to see it. When will it be shown? |

I think the figure changes when you take into account consecutive years. PhreakNIC has happened every year its been in existence. I don't think that's the case for the others. But if we are wrong, we should get to the bottom of it. I'm not sure what the schedule is going to be like. I'm also trying to clear Freedom Downtime and Outfoxed. I'm waiting to hear back from both parties in question. I tried to clear Fog of War, but Sony and New Yorker Films wanted no part of it. They want several hundred bucks for a showing. I'm also planning to clear the BBS Documentary with Jason Scott at the con.. It looks like we are going to have a full lineup.. I'll probably run No Maps at least twice, since its so damn good. |

AFAIK neither Summercon nor Pumpcon has skipped a year. |

The BBS Documentary has already been cleared... that's what Jason Scott's presentation will be - explaining the rules to the drinking game and then we screen the film. |

That's about what I figured. Hopefully the technical situation will allow us to also broadcast it over the cable when Scott's presentation is going on. If not, we can air it again later at some point.. I got back the official word from the 2600 people that Freedom Downtime is cleared. Still waiting on Outfoxed. I'm trying to get in contact with the people that made Control Room as well.. |
