Perhaps the reason that Obsenity is so vaugely defined in terms of "contemporary community standards" is that it is essentially a prohibition of speech which is too gross to garner widespread defense from the community. If the community will look the other way for fear of being associated with something they don't like it doesn't matter what the meaning of the Constitution is.
