The Observer | International | Armed and dangerous - Flipper the firing dolphin let loose by Katrina by Decius at 1:41 am EDT, Sep 26, 2005 |
Usually dolphins were controlled via signals transmitted through a neck harness. 'The question is, were these dolphins made secure before Katrina struck?' said Sheridan.
This is really interesting, but one suspects wildly inaccurate. Dolphins that are trained to shoot people? Really? Even if its true I find it hard to believe that the Navy would have left them armed as the storm approached. They tend to have fairly careful security proceedures. |

Yes the Navy has trained Dolphins not just for attack, but also they have proven to be amazingly effecient at dearming mines and even setting mines on enemy ships. That would be hilarious though if a Dolphin was going around shooting people. |

'My concern is that they have learnt to shoot at divers in wetsuits who have simulated terrorists in exercises. If divers or windsurfers are mistaken for a spy or suicide bomber and if equipped with special harnesses carrying toxic darts, they could fire,' he said. 'The darts are designed to put the target to sleep so they can be interrogated later, but what happens if the victim is not found for hours?'
What happens? BEST DEATH EVAR. |

It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.
I want to believe. |

The news this past week has been unusually surreal. Between attack dolphins and weather machines, its getting a little hard to take anything seriously. Ok, so I wasn't taking the weather machine thing seriously. Maybe I took the SuicideGirls thing a little two seriously... But in the face of killer dolphins, I think I have some leeway to work with. I love these moments in time when everything sounds a little closer to fiction then reality. Somewhere between weather machines and killer dolphins, I hope to find the balance. Update: The Navy denies trailing dolphins to attack humans or deliver bombs to ships. That means no suicide bomber dolphins. |
