The Crazy Eyes of Supreme Court Nominee Judge John Roberts on Flickr
by Rattle at 3:38 pm EDT, Sep 14, 2005

Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee Judge John Roberts listens to a question from Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) during the second day of his confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington September 13, 2005. Roberts was pressed by senators for his views on the strength of established legal precedent with regard to the controversial issue of abortion rights and the landmark Roe vs. Wade abortion case. I think this is an edited photo. Otherwise, its worrying. The eyes are looking in different directions and have different pupil sizes. The left eye is focused on the camera, the right eye is focused on something off axis and upward in the distance...

Besides looking freakin' crazy in the pics - I havn't heard much bad about this guy. His answers to the questions I've seen, seem very appropriate.

Any bad dirt on him?

Well, he skirts the abortion issue which, really, is not a hot topic currently but always has the tendency to pop up and jeopardize women's rights. Other that, I don't like him on principle...he's too damn young to have a decent record.

Who wouldn't skirt the abortion issue though? Men shouldn't even be involved in that issue.

We should resolve that issue, by letting women and only women vote or something - and then let it be final for 20 years or something and vote again. Men shouldn't be involved for two reasons. (1) The baby isn't inside the man. And (2) It gets men off the hook for whatever their belief might be. :)

I actually have an article I need to write on bloggers reactions to the Roberts nomination hearings for my reporting class. I am finding myself frustrated that there isn't much discussion about the guy. Not nearly as much as I expect anyway..

As for dirt, I have not seen much. Most of the concern seems to be centering around Roe vs. Wade, as if that's a big surprise. I've seen several people speculating based on statements he has made that he would overturn the decision.

He is going to wind up getting confirmed, as expected. There has been much talk about the whole conservative packing of the bench, and I think its largely groundless. The two outgoing justices were both conservatives, and damn good justices.

I believe that its the next nomination that is going to spark the huge battles and debates.
