Articles of Consternation - Iraq's infuriatingly vague constitution. By Fred Kaplan by Mike the Usurper at 6:52 pm EDT, Aug 24, 2005 |
The charter is vague to the point of vacuousness in its most basic proclamations. Article 2 reads: Islam is the official religion of state and a fundamental source for legislation. (a) No law may contravene the essential verities of Islamic law. (b) No law may contravene the principles of democracy. (c) No law may contravene the rights and basic liberties enumerated in this constitution.
Actually, by the rules as listed here, they're trying to build a government which is proscribed from doing anything. Weimar Republic anyone? |

We're only in this so the middle east needs us forever. This will suit our needs. |

I can't believe they've drafted a constituion this quick. It took us the better part of 6 years. Gives me hope that maybe they can take care of themselves and we might be able to pull out in the next 5 years or so. At least I hope so, there are so many more countries I want us to attack and if we get Hitlery in office she'll just sit on her ass like BJ, and somehow get credit for being a great president. |

That crap about no law may contravene Islam ticks me off to the extreme. Obviously you can't 'free a people' that don't want to be free. |
