The idea that the curriculum needs to be revamped is correctbut the hollistic approach is not the best method for many students. One of the biggest problem with education reform is that teachers and administrators are not the ones being cunsulted about these decisions. The people making decisions do not have a firm grasp on the reality of a classroom setting.
I agree with Palidrome: a 20-year teaching veteran is bound to have a pretty clear sense of what and how subjects need to be taught, regardless of the specific methodology. Back to the powerpoint, however, I would have been more interested in it if it had continued on to actually develop the curriculum which is the crux of the problem, instead of lecturing on how it could be done. Even sticking with just the first few grades would have illustrated his point better AND, as my educational experience has taught me, a case study is always more effective for remembering salient points than 76 slides of colored fonts. -janelane, unconvinced RE: Could the conventional wisdom about education be wrong? |
