Premier Foods, the maker of Branston pickle and Typhoo tea, today targeted healthy eaters by buying the meat-substitute company Quorn for £172m.

Since its launch in Britain a decade ago, Quorn has become the UK's most popular branded alternative to meat.

Robert Schofield, the chief executive of Premier, believes the market for Quorn could be increased enormously by targeting all healthy eaters as well as the food's core market of vegetarians.
