19% of US Females and 24% of US males smoke.
by Acidus at 1:45 pm EDT, May 31, 2005

] In the United States, 19 percent of adult women and 24
] percent of adult men smoke, according to the U.S. Centers
] for Disease Control. Smoking is the single biggest cause
] of heart disease and cancer.

Little fact at the end of an otherwise unsurprising article. I really had no gauge of how many people in the US smoke. Some of my friends do, but its below 24%. I'd be interested in figures on smoking by education level, race, and economic status. Quick google shows some limited info about California...

Is smoking really the "number one cause of heart disease." I would think obesity was the number one cause of heart disease. This isn't to say that smoking isn't as dangerous as obesity. Its far more dangerous. This is simply to say that it seems like there are a aweful lot more obese people then smokers.

In any event, I googled the text "number one cause of heart disease." Nearly every page offers a different cause. Some say smoking. Some say eating meat. Some say high cholesterol. Some say stress. Some say diabetes, which is technically true but a bit redundant. One site cites milk consumption.

In any event, if you want some hard data its available from the right sources.
