MemeStreams Site Update, 4/20/2005
by Rattle at 7:42 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2005

We pushed an update out to the site today. This update includes changes to the MemeBox, an update logo graphic, and numerous behind the scenes type things.

Thanks to Joe Gawlik (terratogen) for the new MemeStreams logo!

Let Decius or I know if you spot any problems...

The Memebox changes look awesome (and were much needed), thanks!

Does the change mean that other stuff may be in the works, like being able to embed HTML hyperlinks (or maybe even images) in a message? When I think about whether it's time to switch to another blog site, that's a big differentiator for me, along with the ability to easily tell *who* wrote a particular message. Like, it's still a bummer to find a really cool link, and post some text about it in my memestream, and see that it's popular and shows up on the Memestreams home page, but then see somebody else's name under my words. :/

Yes, there are a number of things in the works.

We stopped working on our development branch and we are backporting changes present in it to the production site right now. There are a number of things on the way. A whole slew of things on the backend that have been holding us up. We've made some compromises in order to get changes to the main site quicker.

The changes you talk of here are all contingent on changes to the structure of the backend database. Its not easy or straightforward to accomplish. We have to do it in steps. First things that will hit will be a change in quoting style. The rest will follow.

Once we make the next round of changes to the database, we are going to be able to reduce the amount of redundant text we store internally, which also gives us a way to tell who wrote the original text and display that information.

You will be able to link to other memes within a meme. There will be a way to post "silent memes", or memes without descriptions.. The effect will be a way to hyperlink, but if you have a description for the meme you link, it will go there first. At least that is the current plan.

The topic system is also going way in favor of a folksonomy/tagging implementation.

Keep in mind, we have no staff or funding here. Tom has a full-time (and demanding) job, and I am currently a full-time student doing work on the side. The upkeep the site requires is non-trivial as well. We _are_ always working on things, even if the products of it are not always visible.

Oooh, do you mean like the kind where I can put multiple categories on a single post? I'd love that. Especially with stuff about the Da Vinci Code, I've sometimes memed things that would fit equally well under the categories of "Cryptography", "Books", "Movies", "Cyberculture", and "Religion", and it's been hard to choose just one category.

Looking forward to the new stuff,

Elonka :)

There is a redundant post from Decius not displayed in this view.
