Dancing Man Code by Elonka at 9:12 pm EDT, Apr 5, 2005 |
] In Sherlock Holmes' story "The Adventure of the Dancing ] Men", a man reports that his wife, Elsie, became upset ] when she received several notes with figures of dancing ] men on them. Holmes went about deciphering the code. Someone sent me a pic of a T-shirt from a convention, that used this code. It was a fun little brain stretch. If anyone else wants to take a look: http://www.livejournal.com/users/tapestry01/303595.html Elonka |

I tried to do this without cheating, and I filled in as much as made sense, only to find out that the characters were not consistant. Character 4 and character 6 in the top row are CLEARLY different! Yet they both represent the same letter! That is intentionally misleading to use 2 characters for the same letter. I know (now, after finding the solution) their significance, but that was a pretty tough thing ot figure out. I would have struggled with the significance of the flags for days. I guess I should stick to programming and leave teh cyphering to you. ;) |

Hmm, I get: Character 4 == "o". Arms up, left leg bent Character 6 == "e". Arms up, legs straight, feet pointed out Or are we talking about a different section? I *did* find an error in the code though: Second line, fourth character. Arms up, legs straight. It *should* be an "e", like character 6, but holding a flag. But instead it's an "a": arms up, right leg bent, just like the character at line 1, character 11. So it means either a graphic design error, or perhaps just a fold in the cloth that showed up from the way that the pic was taken. Elonka |

I think you were referring to the T-shirt perhaps? |
