VERY unlikely story IMO.. Nearly all handguns made in the last ~20 years have had firing pin blocking and/or hammer to pin transfer bar safety mechanisms which prevent accidental discharge w/o the trigger actually being pulled to prevent exactly this class of accident. If it was an older gun w/o this technolgy and he had a round loaded in the chamber of an idle weapon, he's a total dumbass and obviously too irresponsible to own such a weapon.
