] Institute of Standards and Technology officials plan to
] phase out a widely used cryptographic hash function known
] as SHA-1 in favor of larger and stronger hash functions
] such as SHA-256 and SHA-512.

If you had been paying attention you'd have caught the wispers a few days ago.

U In retrospect I think this is more a commentary on the strength of 2^80 rather then a warning shot. 2010 is not as distant as it once seemed. 2^80 is looking a bit weak. 2^69 even more so...
