A question to ponder
by Palindrome at 2:08 pm EST, Feb 8, 2005

Situation:
you are driving down the road or stopped at a stop light and when you glance around you see a woman sitting alone in her car crying her eyes out.

what is your reaction?

Do you even give it a second thought?

What do you think about?

How does it make you feel?

[ I'd think about it long enough to arrive at the conclusion that life sucks sometimes, for everyone. I'd also wonder what was so bad that she broke down right there... is she overly dramatic or did something *actually bad* happen. Then I'd think about one or two things that i might be sad about before moving on, probably because I got hungry for some pizza. -k]

I've seen that before, once or twice. I just pray that she feels better by the time she gets to where she's going. I'm not very religious, but it would probably make her feel better knowing the sentiment.

I have been that woman, and I have wondered what people thought. No one has ever stopped or asked. There is probably some way humans have of knowing when someone is crying from sadness or when someone is crying because they are in excruiciating physical pain. My guess is you'd get people helping in that case.

A car is a safe-ish public place to break down, when things are awful.

Is she parked on the side of the road or is she blocking the lanes? If she's sitting on the side of the road I'd think she's having a real issue. Unfortunately in this day and age, if she's in the road itself I'd have to immediately think that she's part of some scam. Perhaps a carjacking.

She is driving down the road or just stopped at the stop light.

Then she should get off the road before she causes and accident.

I've been that woman, from time to time. Life has its ups and downs, its good days and its bad days. My first reaction would probably be that she'd just had a loss of some sort, ranging from the end of a relationship to a death in the family, and that she was going through the sucky but necessary grieving process. Ultimately, I see crying is a good thing, as a release. Grief hurts, it sucks, it takes its own goddamn time, but it does eventually pass, and life really does gets better again.

As for what I'd do? Well, if it looked like she still had control of the car (momentary crying while at a stop light, but she started up again when the light turned green), I'd silently wish her well and drive on. If she was swerving around though, or the car were stopped in an unnatural place, like the middle of an intersection, I'd call 911 and give them the location and describe the situation (including car make and license plate), so that someone could come and check to see if there might be a more serious problem.
